Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Best for anyone who loves a strong drama. One to watch when you can give it your full attention.
The mood
Thoughtful and character-driven.
The pace
Takes its time with its characters, at 1 hr 43 min.
What might put you off
  • It's in Japanese, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Made in 1960: an older pace and style.
  • Skip it if you need something light and fast tonight.

Long takes and a highly theatrical visual approach combine to form a tense and confrontational look at the decline of a socialist student activists' movement in Japan.
