Why it’s a Weeknight Watch

With soft box office and little lasting buzz, it's a mixed bag. Fine if it's on; don't plan your night around it.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
One for fans of a good courtroom showdown and anyone interested in what war does to people. The best scenes are battles fought with words. Liked To Kill a Mockingbird or Judgment at Nuremberg? This is a good next one. It puts you in the middle of the fighting, and doesn't let you forget the cost.
The mood
Thoughtful and character-driven.
The pace
Gives its people room to develop, at 1 hr 45 min.
What might put you off
  • Made in 1955: an older pace and style.
  • Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.

A Mexican boy accused of rape and murder becomes a pawn for Communists and red-baiters. A courtroom drama set in 1947 and underlying post-WW2 acute problems facing the USA such as stormy race relations and the growing threat of local communism.
