Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe

With almost no lasting buzz and soft box office, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
A natural pick for anyone who likes a story with a soundtrack worth keeping and anyone drawn to the darker side of the street. The music is woven into the story, not just laid on top. Same wavelength as Glengarry Glen Ross or Oliver!.
The mood
Dark and gritty.
The pace
Quiet, then quietly devastating, at 1 hr 15 min. Short enough for a weeknight.
What might put you off
  • Made in 1930: an older pace and style.
  • Skip it if you like your heroes clean-cut.

Ming Toy is on the auction block in China. She is saved by Billy and taken to San Francisco by Lo Sang Kee. To save her from deportation she is sold to Charlie Yong, the Chop Suey King. Billy kidnaps her with plans of marriage.
