Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe
With almost no lasting buzz and soft box office, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.
Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below. Is it for you?
- Who'll love it
- If you count yourself among anyone who remembers how big everything felt at sixteen and anyone who's survived a family wedding, this one's for you. It gets the awkwardness and the high stakes of being young. Sits nicely alongside The Fabelmans or Lady Bird. Relationships are put under a microscope, for better or worse.
- The mood
- Funny with heart.
- The pace
- Lets scenes breathe, at 1 hr 29 min. Done before bedtime.
- What might put you off
- It's in French, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
- Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.
Summer of 1967. La Goulette, a touristic beach of Tunisia, is the site where three seventeen-year-old girls live: Gigi, Sicilian and Catholic; Meriem, Tunisian and Muslim; Tina, French and Jewish. They would like to have their first sexual experience during that summer, challenging their families. Their fathers, Youssef, Jojo and Giuseppe, are old friends and their friendship will be in crisis because of the girls, while Hadj, an old rich Arab, would like to marry Meriem.
