Weeknight Watchearly ratingWhy it’s a Weeknight Watch
With almost no lasting buzz, it's a mixed bag. Fine if it's on; don't plan your night around it.
Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below. Is it for you?
- Who'll love it
- A natural pick for anyone who likes a cape with their popcorn and anyone curious about anime. Comic-book roots, so expect big stakes and bigger set pieces. If you loved Batman Returns or GANTZ:O, start here. Made in the anime tradition: bold, emotional and willing to go dark.
- The mood
- Intense, feel-good.
- The pace
- Paced for all ages, at 2 hr.
- What might put you off
- No age rating on record, so check it first for young kids.
- It's in Japanese, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
- Made in 1967: an older pace and style.
- Skip it if you can't get past animation (your loss).
The son of an assassinated feudal lord, in the Muromachi period, attempts to avenge his father's death and meets Kagemaru, a renegade ninja helping peasants and farmers rebel against Oda Nobunaga's regime, all depicted through an experimental form of filming pages from the original manga set to sound.
