Shankar Dada

Seen it?

1976 | 130 min | Crime, Drama

Sunday Safe Betearly rating

Why it’s a Sunday Safe Bet

It was a box office smash, though it had almost no lasting buzz. A safe bet when you want something reliable.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Aimed squarely at people who like their stories with a little danger and people who like stories about real, flawed people. Plenty of moral grey areas to chew on. Liked The Public Enemy or Glengarry Glen Ross? This is a good next one.
The mood
Dark and gritty.
The pace
Character-first and patient, at 2 hr 10 min.
What might put you off
  • It's in Hindi, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Made in 1976: an older pace and style.
  • Skip it if you like your heroes clean-cut.

Babubhai is a notorious gangster who is threatened by Shankar Dada, another criminal, but Babubhai manages to strike a deal with him. Things take a turn when Babubhai discovers that Shankar has a twin brother who is a police officer.
