Why it’s a Weeknight Watch

With soft box office and little lasting buzz, it's a mixed bag. Fine if it's on; don't plan your night around it.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
A natural pick for people who love a good growing-up story and people who like the lights on afterwards. Small moments carry real weight here, the way they do when you're young. Sits nicely alongside Nosferatu or Obsession. The scares come from the creaks and shadows as much as the jumps.
The mood
Scary, warm and romantic.
The pace
Tense from early on, at 1 hr 41 min.
What might put you off
  • It's in Italian, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Skip it if you like your stories firmly grounded in the real world.

An American ballerina arrives in Hungary to enroll in a ballet school and it soon becomes apparent that things are not what they seem.
