With a box office flop and almost no lasting buzz, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.
Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below. Is it for you?
- Who'll love it
- If you count yourself among politics junkies and music lovers, this one's for you. Power and ambition drive every scene. Liked Life of Brian or Dinner in America? This is a good next one. The music is woven into the story, not just laid on top.
- The mood
- Provocative satire that goes after everyone, romantic.
- The pace
- Zips along, at 1 hr 15 min. Short enough for a weeknight.
- What might put you off
- It's in another language, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
- Made in 1975: an older pace and style.
- Skip it if you're after something serious tonight.
Artak has served his military service in the Russian countryside where he meets Valya. But Valya's mother refuses to send her only daughter to “these far highlands, where earthquakes happen all the time”. Artak is forced to ask his contrasting and numerous relatives –Armenian villagers– to visit a remote Russian village to bring a bride to Armenia.
