Why it’s a Weeknight Watch

With soft box office and little lasting buzz, it's a mixed bag. Fine if it's on; don't plan your night around it.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
If you count yourself among people who root for the clever crook and people who can't resist a good whodunit, this one's for you. The fun is in the planning, the double-crosses and the moment it all goes sideways. Sits nicely alongside The Asphalt Jungle or Strangers on a Train. The investigation drives everything, one lead at a time.
The mood
Tense, dark and gritty.
The pace
Gives its people room to develop, at 1 hr 33 min.
What might put you off
  • Rated PG. Worth a look first if you have very young kids.
  • Made in 1973: an older pace and style.
  • Skip it if you need something light and fast tonight.

An insurance investigator romances a wealthy young beauty when he suspects she may be involved in fencing stolen jewels.
