Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe

With almost no lasting buzz and soft box office, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Best for people who like their stories with a little heart-flutter and people who like their stories at full throttle. Popcorn viewing in the best sense. Same wavelength as Flash Gordon or Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
The mood
Warm and romantic.
The pace
Lean, with little time wasted, at 1 hr 37 min.
What might put you off
  • Made in 1950: an older pace and style.
  • Not for anyone who finds explosions tiring.

The title character, played by John Payne, is a ship's captain whose embittered behavior after losing his lady love seemingly leads to tragedy. Accused of deliberately scuttling his ship during a typhoon, Captain China hopes to clear himself by signing on as a common seaman on a vessel captain by his former first mate Brendensen. There's no love lost between the two men, and their mutual animosity is intensified when both fall in love with beautiful passenger.
