Monday Morning Maybeearly ratingWhy it’s a Monday Morning Maybe
With a box office flop and almost no lasting buzz, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.
Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below. Is it for you?
- Who'll love it
- If you count yourself among anyone who remembers how big everything felt at sixteen and anyone who's ever talked to their pet, this one's for you. It gets the awkwardness and the high stakes of being young. Liked Mysterious Skin or Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms? This is a good next one. An animal steals a fair few scenes.
- The mood
- Thoughtful and character-driven.
- The pace
- Gives its people room to develop, at 1 hr 30 min. Short enough for a weeknight.
- What might put you off
- An animal is harmed or dies.
- It's in Japanese, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
- Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.
14 year old Nakamura is sexually abused by her stepfather. She invents a friend who is coming to her rescue when she really needs it.
