Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe
With a box office flop and almost no lasting buzz, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.
Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below. Is it for you?
- Who'll love it
- A natural pick for anyone who likes a story with a soundtrack worth keeping and anyone interested in what war does to people. The music is woven into the story, not just laid on top. Liked Inglourious Basterds or Beasts of No Nation? This is a good next one. It puts you in the middle of the fighting, and doesn't let you forget the cost.
- The mood
- Intense.
- The pace
- Quiet, then quietly devastating, at 1 hr 35 min.
- What might put you off
- It's in French, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
- Made in 1973: an older pace and style.
- Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.
In Algiers, during the Algerian War of Independence, one of the leaders of the FLN was arrested by the French colonial army, which used the most violent methods to make the prisoners speak. The use of torture poses a conscience problem for a French officer. Playing shot-reverse-shot, between the tortured and his torturer, in a suffocating camera, Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina approaches torture by drawing inspiration from the story of his father, who died of abuse.
