Why it’s a Weeknight Watch
With a box office flop and almost no lasting buzz, it's a mixed bag. Fine if it's on; don't plan your night around it.
Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below. Is it for you?
- Who'll love it
- Made for anyone who's ever wondered how they'd survive and fans of a good haunting. The tension comes from simply getting through the next day. Liked 127 Hours or Everest? This is a good next one. The scares come from the creaks and shadows as much as the jumps.
- The mood
- Scary.
- The pace
- Keeps the tension tight, at 1 hr 32 min.
- What might put you off
- It's in German, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
- Made in 1935: an older pace and style.
- Not one for anyone who hates jump scares.
German film about a Himalayan expedition and the search for a mountain spirit, who guarded, according to the tradition of the locals, the peaks of high mountains. The long-lost and recently rediscovered and restored film is now a unique cinematic document because it is the first feature film that was shot directly in the Himalayas (up to 6400 m altitude). Hans Ertl even turned his Bell & Howell to the main summit of Sia Kangri, 7422m. Likewise, the film contains footage from India and Tibet, from a time long before the emergence of mass tourism. Some of the footage was later recycled in ‘Lost horizon’ (1937) by Frank Capra and in ‘Storm over Tibet’ (1952).
