Why it’s a Saturday Special

It made about 10 times its budget, people are still talking about it and it earned strong reviews (88% on Rotten Tomatoes). A strong pick for the weekend.

Our take: A candy-colored blockbuster with more on its mind than its marketing suggested, and half of a cultural event that got people into theaters in costume.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it: Made for anyone who wants a laugh, fantasy fans and adventure fans. Critics rate it higher than audiences do, so it rewards patience more than it chases thrills.

What might put you off: Nothing much: an easy pick for most people.
