Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Great for spy-story fans and people who love relationship stories. Nobody is quite who they seem. More of a critics' pick than a crowd-pleaser: worth it if you like something a little different.
The mood
Thoughtful and character-driven.
The pace
Gives its people room to develop, at 1 hr 38 min.
What might put you off
  • Rated PG-13: a parent's death or loss. Probably too much for younger kids.
  • It's in Spanish, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Made in 1970: an older pace and style.
  • Audiences were cooler on it than critics.

As a young woman, Tristana is orphaned and taken under the guardianship of Don Lope, a respected member of the community, who takes advantage of his innocent charge. When Tristana falls in love with artist Horacio, she must learn to be more assertive in order to achieve independence from her nefarious guardian, or her blossoming relationship with Horacio is doomed.
