Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Great for music lovers and anyone interested in what war does to people. The music is woven into the story, not just laid on top. Liked La Vie en Rose or Henry V? This is a good next one. It puts you in the middle of the fighting, and doesn't let you forget the cost.
The mood
Thoughtful and character-driven.
The pace
Quiet, then quietly devastating, at 1 hr 47 min.
What might put you off
  • It's in French, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.

France, 1425. During the Hundred Years’ War, Jeannette, age of 8, looks after her sheep in the small village of Domremy. One day she tells her friend Hauviette how she cannot bear the suffering caused by the English. Madame Gervaise, a nun, tries to reason with the young girl, but she is ready to take up arms for the salvation of souls and the liberation of the Kingdom of France. Carried by her faith, she will become Joan of Arc.
