Why it’s a Weeknight Watch

With soft box office and little lasting buzz, it's a mixed bag. Fine if it's on; don't plan your night around it.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it: Tailor-made for anyone interested in what war does to people and history buffs. It puts you in the middle of the fighting, and doesn't let you forget the cost. Fans of Casualties of War or Braveheart should feel right at home.
The mood: Harrowing.
The pace: Unhurried and epic, at 2 hr 30 min.
What might put you off: It's long: 2 hr 30 min.
It's in Polish, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.

Summer of 1939. Zosia is a young Polish girl who is deeply in love with Ukrainian Petro. Their great love will be put to the test when her father decides to marry her to a wealthy widower Skiba. Right after wedding she is left alone because her husband is drafted to the Polish army for the war with Germany. Meanwhile, tensions grow due to Jews, Poles, and Ukrainians living side by side.
