Sunday Safe Betearly rating

Why it’s a Sunday Safe Bet

Critics loved it (97% on Rotten Tomatoes), though it had almost no lasting buzz and soft box office. A safe bet when you want something reliable.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Right up the alley of anyone who remembers how big everything felt at sixteen and anyone who loves a strong drama. It gets the awkwardness and the high stakes of being young. Critics like it more than audiences, which usually means it takes its time or takes risks.
The mood
Thoughtful and character-driven.
The pace
Lets scenes breathe, at 1 hr 50 min.
What might put you off
  • It's in Swedish, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Audiences were cooler on it than critics.
  • Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.

Elle Marja, 14, is a reindeer-breeding Sami girl. Exposed to the racism of the 1930s and phrenological examinations at her boarding school, she starts dreaming of another life. To achieve this other life she has to become someone else and break all ties with her family and culture.
