Sunday Safe Bet

Why it’s a Sunday Safe Bet

Critics loved it (90% on Rotten Tomatoes), though it had little lasting buzz. A safe bet when you want something reliable.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Made for politics junkies and anyone who's survived an office job. Power and ambition drive every scene. More of a critics' pick than a crowd-pleaser: worth it if you like something a little different.
The mood
Thoughtful and character-driven.
The pace
Character-first and patient, at 1 hr 52 min.
What might put you off
  • It's in Polish, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Made in 1979: an older pace and style.
  • Skip it if you need something light and fast tonight.

Filip buys an 8mm movie camera when his first child is born. Because it's the first camera in town, he's named official photographer by the local Party boss. His horizons widen when he is sent to regional film festivals with his first works but his focus on movie making also leads to domestic strife and philosophical dilemmas.
