Why it’s a Weeknight Watch
With soft box office and little lasting buzz, it's a mixed bag. Fine if it's on; don't plan your night around it.
Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below. Is it for you?
- Who'll love it
- If you count yourself among anyone who loves a strong drama, this one's for you. Best on a quiet night when you're in the mood to feel something. Fans of Hamlet or The Elephant Man should feel right at home.
- The mood
- Emotional (bring tissues).
- The pace
- Character-first and patient, at 1 hr 57 min.
- What might put you off
- Made in 1969: an older pace and style.
- Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.
Tony Richardson's Hamlet is based on his own stage production. Filmed entirely within the Roundhouse in London (a disused train shed), it is shot almost entirely in close up, focusing the attention on faces and language rather than action.
