Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe

With a box office flop and almost no lasting buzz, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
A natural pick for anyone curious about anime and martial arts fans. Made in the anime tradition: bold, emotional and willing to go dark. Shelve it next to The Adventures of Robin Hood or A Hard Day's Night. The fight choreography is a big part of the appeal.
The mood
Warm and romantic.
The pace
Epic and sweeping, at 2 hr 38 min.
What might put you off
  • It's long: 2 hr 38 min.
  • It's in Japanese, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Skip it if romance makes you roll your eyes.

The critically acclaimed all-woman Japanese acting revue Takarazuka brings Rurouni Kenshin to life, creating a new twist on a globally loved story.
