Sunday Safe Betearly rating

Why it’s a Sunday Safe Bet

Critics loved it (93% on Rotten Tomatoes), though it had a box office loss and little lasting buzz. A safe bet when you want something reliable.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Right up the alley of fantasy readers and readers who like to compare the book and the screen version. Its magic has rules, and the story plays by them. Critics rate it higher than audiences do, so it rewards patience more than it chases thrills.
The mood
Scary, warm and romantic.
The pace
Tense from early on, at 1 hr 55 min.
What might put you off
  • It's in another language, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Audiences were cooler on it than critics.
  • Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.
