Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe

With almost no lasting buzz and soft box office, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Aimed squarely at anyone who loves backroom deals and speeches and people who love a good family story. Power and ambition drive every scene. Liked Ran or Ugetsu? This is a good next one. Anyone with siblings or parents will recognize something here.
The mood
Thoughtful and character-driven.
The pace
Quiet, then quietly devastating, at 1 hr 48 min.
What might put you off
  • It's in Japanese, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Made in 1955: an older pace and style.
  • Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.

Japan, 1137. The Taira family, a samurai clan, becomes involved in the disputes between Emperor Toba and the monks of Mount Hiei.
