Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe

With a box office flop and almost no lasting buzz, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Right up the alley of history and war-film fans and anyone interested in what war does to ordinary people. It puts you in the middle of the fighting, and doesn't let you forget the cost. Sits nicely alongside Operation Petticoat or The Reader.
The mood
Intense.
The pace
Character-first and patient, at 1 hr 29 min. Short enough for a weeknight.
What might put you off
  • It's in Russian, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Made in 1966: an older pace and style.
  • Skip it if you need something light and fast tonight.

Spring, 1944. The Great Patriotic war. The German fascists are still in Sevastopol. A fierce combat is taking place there. At the same time in Yalta, which has already been freed, life goes on peacefully. People believe that the war has left them, that it is far away and no longer dangerous… But the torpedo motor-boat squadron stationed in Yalta is still having a hard time. Every day Soviet marines undertake dangerous sorties towards the German-occupied Sevastopol.
