Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe

With almost no lasting buzz and soft box office, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Right up the alley of fans of prison dramas and lovers of period drama. The walls close in, and so does the tension. Same wavelength as The Count of Monte Cristo. The costumes and settings are a feast on their own.
The mood
Thoughtful and character-driven.
The pace
Character-first and patient, at 1 hr 14 min. Short enough for a weeknight.
What might put you off
  • Made in 1929: an older pace and style.
  • Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.

Devon, 1815. In the dying days of the Napoleonic Wars, a Danish-American lieutenant, Cecil Stark, is captured attempting to run supplies to the French. Imprisoned at Dartmoor, he and his fellow captives make a desperate escape attempt, in which Stark is shot. He is found by Grace Malherb, and the two fall in love while he convalesces on her family estate. But Grace's father is heavily indebted to the boorish Peter Norcot, whose price for forgiving the loan is Grace's hand in marriage....
