Why it’s a Weeknight Watch

With just 34% on Rotten Tomatoes and a box office loss, it's a mixed bag. Fine if it's on; don't plan your night around it.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it: Made for crime fans, anyone who likes to be kept guessing and anyone who wants a laugh. Audiences love it more than critics do: a crowd-pleaser first.
The mood: Light and funny, tense.
The pace: Fast-moving, at 1 hr 51 min.
What might put you off: Rated R: expect violence and drug use.
Critics were cooler on it than audiences.

JJ, aka John Shaft Jr., may be a cyber security expert with a degree from MIT, but to uncover the truth behind his best friend’s untimely death, he needs an education only his dad can provide. Absent throughout JJ’s youth, the legendary locked-and-loaded John Shaft agrees to help his progeny navigate Harlem’s heroin-infested underbelly.
