Sunday Safe Betearly rating

Why it’s a Sunday Safe Bet

Critics loved it (92% on Rotten Tomatoes), though it had a box office flop and almost no lasting buzz. A safe bet when you want something reliable.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
One for people who love a good growing-up story and anyone with a complicated family (so, everyone). Small moments carry real weight here, the way they do when you're young. Same wavelength as The Perks of Being a Wallflower or Kes. Critics like it more than audiences, which usually means it takes its time or takes risks.
The mood
Thoughtful and character-driven.
The pace
Lets scenes breathe, at 1 hr 33 min.
What might put you off
  • Rated R: meant for adults.
  • Audiences were cooler on it than critics.
  • Skip it if you need something light and fast tonight.

Manny, Joel and Jonah tear their way through childhood and push against the volatile love of their parents. As Manny and Joel grow into versions of their father and Ma dreams of escape, Jonah, the youngest, embraces an imagined world all his own.
