Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe

With a box office flop and almost no lasting buzz, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Right up the alley of manga readers and anyone who likes a story with emotional weight. Made in the anime tradition: bold, emotional and willing to go dark.
The mood
Thoughtful and character-driven.
The pace
Quiet, then quietly devastating, at 2 hr 2 min.
What might put you off
  • It's in Japanese, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.

Haruna is a lively tomboy in the 5th year at elementary school. One day, while playing with Hiroyuki, a boy whom she has known for a long time, they play a game of putting their private parts together. A sex education lesson given by a new teacher, Yagi, makes Haruna suspect that she might be pregnant.
