Sunday Safe Betearly rating

Why it’s a Sunday Safe Bet

Critics loved it (100% on Rotten Tomatoes), though it had almost no lasting buzz and soft box office. A safe bet when you want something reliable.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Right up the alley of people who like the lights on afterwards and anyone who loves trying to stay one step ahead. The scares come from the creaks and shadows as much as the jumps. Fans of Crimson Peak or Leviticus should feel right at home.
The mood
Scary, romantic.
The pace
Builds dread steadily, at 1 hr 14 min. An easy one to fit in on a school night.
What might put you off
  • It's in German, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Skip it if you scare easily or watch alone at night.

After inheriting a run-down castle, a dispirited woman and her ill-tempered husband decide to spend the night, as time and reality shift around them.
