Sunday Safe BetWhy it’s a Sunday Safe Bet
It earned strong reviews (90% on Rotten Tomatoes), though it had a box office flop and almost no lasting buzz. A safe bet when you want something reliable.
Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below. Is it for you?
- Who'll love it
- If you count yourself among anyone who remembers how big everything felt at sixteen and fans of a good courtroom showdown, this one's for you. It gets the awkwardness and the high stakes of being young. Sits nicely alongside River's Edge. Critics rate it higher than audiences do, so it rewards patience more than it chases thrills.
- The mood
- Dark and gritty.
- The pace
- Character-first and patient, at 1 hr 35 min.
- What might put you off
- It's in French, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
- Audiences were cooler on it than critics.
- Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.
Lise (16 years old) is accused of murdering her best friend. As the trial starts, her parents stand right by her side. But once her secret life is revealed in court, the truth becomes indistinguishable.
