Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe

With almost no lasting buzz and soft box office, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Right up the alley of people who love a good family story and readers who like to compare the book and the screen version. Anyone with siblings or parents will recognize something here. Liked The Talented Mr. Ripley? This is a good next one. Adapted from a book, so readers can compare notes.
The mood
Funny with heart.
The pace
Gives its people room to develop, at 1 hr 50 min.
What might put you off
  • It's in Italian, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Made in 1977: an older pace and style.
  • Skip it if you like your heroes clean-cut.

Mario, a rich and eccentric war hero befriends Marco, a loner with a sailboat, and takes him home to meet his estranged wife Cleofe and sexually repressed sister in law Matilde. Mario confesses his love for Matilde and so ensues a love triangle.
