Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe

With a box office flop and almost no lasting buzz, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
One for people who love relationship stories and history and war-film fans. Relationships are put under a microscope, for better or worse. Same wavelength as The Last of the Mohicans or Barry Lyndon. It puts you in the middle of the fighting, and doesn't let you forget the cost.
The mood
Exciting.
The pace
Character-first and patient, at 1 hr 42 min.
What might put you off
  • It's in another language, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Made in 1949: an older pace and style.
  • Skip it if you need something light and fast tonight.

In the 18th century, Robert's beloved Helena is forced to marry the cruel Henrik Brest. Robert becomes Roope the Pirate, the most famous pirate in the Baltic Sea, whose legendary life includes scheming and partying, sword fights and women's adventures.
