Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe

With a box office flop and almost no lasting buzz, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Aimed squarely at romantics and people who like stories about real, flawed people. Leaves you with something to think about. A good follow-up to Jane Eyre.
The mood
Warm and romantic.
The pace
Takes its time with its characters, at 1 hr 27 min. An easy one to fit in on a school night.
What might put you off
  • It's in German, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Made in 1953: an older pace and style.
  • Skip it if you need something light and fast tonight.

When the successful trumpeter Jonny has nearly all his concert earnings seized by tax collector Weber, he has had enough: he packs up his trumpet and travels to the Black Forest. Along the way, he encounters the musical vagabonds Tünnes and Nachtigall; he initially gives them a lift, but after his car is also confiscated by the police, he walks with them to the village of Todtmoos. There, he checks into a guesthouse and promptly falls in love with the innkeeper's daughter, Rosl.
