Weeknight Watchearly rating

Why it’s a Weeknight Watch

With soft box office and little lasting buzz, it's a mixed bag. Fine if it's on; don't plan your night around it.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Right up the alley of fans of giant monsters and bigger battles and anyone who believes we're not alone. The scale is huge: humanity is very much the underdog. Fans of Godzilla or Invasion of the Body Snatchers should feel right at home. The aliens are the hook, but the human reactions are the story.
The mood
Scary.
The pace
Keeps the tension tight, at 1 hr 27 min. Done before bedtime.
What might put you off
  • It's in Japanese, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
  • Made in 1956: an older pace and style.
  • Skip it if you like your stories firmly grounded in the real world.

Large star-shaped aliens travel to earth in hopes of warning them about an oncoming catastrophe. To prevent panic about their appearance, one alien takes the form of a popular singer.
