Why it’s a Weeknight Watch
With little lasting buzz, it's a mixed bag. Fine if it's on; don't plan your night around it.
Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below. Is it for you?
- Who'll love it
- Great for anyone who's ever talked to their pet and readers who like to compare the book and the screen version. An animal steals a fair few scenes. Liked Everest or The Secret Life of Bees? This is a good next one. Adapted from a book, so readers can compare notes.
- The mood
- Tense.
- The pace
- Takes its time with its characters, at 1 hr 23 min. An easy one to fit in on a school night.
- What might put you off
- Rated PG. Worth a look first if you have very young kids.
- It's in German, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
- Made in 1932: an older pace and style.
- Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.
Junta is hated by the people in the village where she lives, especially by the women, who suspect her of being a witch. Only she can climb the nearby mountains to a cave high up, whence a mysterious blue light glows when the moon is full. Many young men of the village have died trying to follow her. She is driven out of town, and takes to living in the mountains. Eventually she shares the secret of the blue light with one man, and he betrays it.
