Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe

With a box office flop and almost no lasting buzz, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Right up the alley of people who root for the clever crook and anyone who likes watching someone settle a score. Half the pleasure is trying to spot the trick before the reveal. Shelve it next to Glengarry Glen Ross or The Age of Innocence. A revenge story, so expect the pressure to build to a reckoning.
The mood
Warm and romantic.
The pace
Character-first and patient, at 1 hr 39 min.
What might put you off
  • Made in 1932: an older pace and style.
  • Not the one if you want explosions or easy laughs.

After bank president David Dwight makes a vast loan to himself to build a remarkable skyscraper, his board questions the propriety of the loan. Despite the devotion of longtime mistress Sarah, the ruthless David, while seeking bank mergers to protect his building, tries to seduce Sarah's secretary, Lynn. David then agrees to a plot by a bank board member to inflate his bank's stock and sell short — just before the market crashes.
