Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe

With almost no lasting buzz and soft box office, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
If you count yourself among anyone who likes a story with a soundtrack worth keeping and people ready for a good cry, this one's for you. The music is woven into the story, not just laid on top. Shelve it next to Ray or Better Man. It's about loss, handled with care rather than melodrama.
The mood
Emotional (bring tissues), feel-good.
The pace
Paced for all ages, at 1 hr 48 min.
What might put you off
  • Rated PG-13: a parent's death or loss. Probably too much for younger kids.
  • Skip it if you need something light and fast tonight.

The chance to shine in a singing competition offers much-needed hope for a Southern middle-schooler who's drowning in worries, from bullies in the halls to turmoil at home -- and the news that his reservist father has been called back to Afghanistan.
