Is it for you?

Who'll love it
A natural pick for people who love a true story told well. Expect to bring it up in conversation afterwards. Critics rate it higher than audiences do, so it rewards patience more than it chases thrills.
The mood
Eye-opening.
The pace
Moves through the story clearly, at 1 hr 14 min. Short enough for a weeknight.
What might put you off
  • Rated PG-13: peril. Probably too much for younger kids.
  • Audiences were cooler on it than critics.
  • Skip it if you want made-up drama tonight.

When National Geographic photographer James Balog asked, “How can one take a picture of climate change?” his attention was immediately drawn to ice. Soon he was asked to do a cover story on glaciers that became the most popular and well-read piece in the magazine during the last five years. But for Balog, that story marked the beginning of a much larger and longer-term project that would reach epic proportions.
