Sunday Safe Betearly rating

Why it’s a Sunday Safe Bet

It was a box office smash, though it had almost no lasting buzz. A safe bet when you want something reliable.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it: A natural pick for people ready for a good cry and anyone who likes a world with its own rules. It's about loss, handled with care rather than melodrama. Sits nicely alongside It's a Wonderful Life.
The mood: Emotional (bring tissues).
The pace: Takes its time with its characters, at 1 hr 20 min. Short enough for a weeknight.
What might put you off: It's in another language, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
Skip it if you need something light and fast tonight.

'M' is an old woman who lives adrift: a lonely shadow that crosses her own geography every day. She spends her days dreaming about her past, until one day she finds something very similar to her - an ant. M decides to share her world haunted by nostalgic memories and a dark presence, until the day a "mechanical angel" arrives to help her...
