Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below. Is it for you?
- Who'll love it
- One for people who love a good growing-up story and people who'll be humming afterwards. It gets the awkwardness and the high stakes of being young. Liked The Children's Hour? This is a good next one. Critics rate it higher than audiences do, so it rewards patience more than it chases thrills.
- The mood
- Warm and romantic.
- The pace
- Character-first and patient, at 1 hr 28 min. Done before bedtime.
- What might put you off
- Rated PG: a parent's death or loss. Worth a look first if you have very young kids.
- It's in German, so expect subtitles (or a dub).
- Made in 1931: an older pace and style.
- Audiences were cooler on it than critics.
A sensitive girl is sent to an all-girls boarding school and develops a romantic attachment to one of her teachers.
