Why it’s a Monday Morning Maybe

With a box office flop and almost no lasting buzz, this one could be a tough watch. Keep your phone handy.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it
Great for people who'll be humming afterwards and anyone who values honest, human stories. The music is woven into the story, not just laid on top. Same wavelength as In Cold Blood. It deals with hard things honestly.
The mood
Dark and gritty.
The pace
Quiet, then quietly devastating, at 1 hr 30 min. An easy one to fit in on a school night.
What might put you off
  • Made in 1942: an older pace and style.
  • Skip it if you like your heroes clean-cut.

During the depths of the Great Depression a hitch-hiker Steve Talbot and juke-joint hostess Lola Mears stumble into Cat-Tail Florida where farmers and pickers struggle under the buyer who rules by monopoly, dirty contracts and violence. Steve helps organize against the buyer, leading to further escalation ending in a lynch mob.
