Why it’s a Weeknight Watch

With almost no lasting buzz, it's a mixed bag. Fine if it's on; don't plan your night around it.

Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below.

Is it for you?

Who'll love it: Made for anyone who loves a strong character drama. If you loved Oz or Escape at Dannemora, start here.
The mood: Thoughtful and character-driven.
The pace: 7 seasons and 169 episodes: a long-haul commitment, hour-long episodes, about 169 hours in all.
What might put you off: A big time investment at 7 seasons.
It's in French, so expect subtitles (or a dub).

Marie Lamontagne, a widowed mother of two in her forties, confesses to a murder she didn't commit to protect her daughter. Thrust into brutally unfamiliar and hostile surroundings, she first learns survival, then confronts the biggest challenge of her life: bonding with her fellow inmates and helping them take back control of their lives.
