With a lukewarm 6.8 out of 10 from audiences and a small audience, it's a mixed bag. Fine if it's on; don't plan your night around it.
Based on critics, audiences, awards, box office and buzz. Details below. Is it for you?
- Who'll love it
- Made for crime-drama fans, anyone who likes to be kept guessing and sci-fi fans. If you loved Mr. Mercedes or Lucifer, start here. Critics rate it higher than audiences do, so it rewards patience more than it chases thrills.
- The mood
- Tense, dark and gritty.
- The pace
- One season: easy to finish in a weekend or two, hour-long episodes, about 10 hours in all.
- What might put you off
- Rated TV-MA: meant for adults.
- It was cancelled, so the story may not get a proper ending.
Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, this saga explores an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension.
